About the Center:

The Environmental Studies Center is operated by the Martin County Public School System.  Students in kindergarten through seventh grade and high school marine biology and environmental studies classes visit the Center each year to participate in hands-on field investigations.  Students explore the St. Lucie Estuary, Indian River Lagoon, Hutchinson Island’s beaches, mangrove swamps and freshwater ponds and wetlands.

The Center is home to a wide variety of marine life and other species:

  • A loggerhead sea turtle

  • Gopher tortoises in their habitat

  • A juvenile American Alligator

  • Freshwater turtles

  • Saltwater aquariums and touch tanks containing various species of fish and crustaceans from the Indian River Lagoon

Clark, the loggerhead sea turtle, swims in his tank at the Center.Joey is an American alligator that lives in his own tiki hut.

Preserved specimens and models populate the classrooms and museum.  Computers and stereoscopes are used as part of the learning experience.  The River Scout, a 30 foot T-craft, is the Center’s floating classroom for 5th and 6th graders.

Established in 1972, the Environmental Studies Center has been recognized by
the Office of Environmental Education and the Governor’s Environmental Education Award.

The Center is open to the public on school days, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
